I love trees, no matter the season. There is something truly wonderful about their barks, their leaves and their fruit. My mother loved Silver Birches, my favourite tree is a Leopard Tree (Caesalpinia ferrea) which isn't indigenous to South Africa - it's a native of Brazil.
I've planted many Leopard trees, and when combined with Pride of India (Lagerstroemia indica) - another favourite - it makes a lofty statement. Pride of India's bark reminds me of a women's body - well, to clarify, not mine - rather the tall svelte type.
My garden is filled with over sixteen Broad-leaf Maples (Acer macrophyllum). In summer they shroud the garden in cool shade and in winter their branches are barren of leaves, yet still dignified.
Cheeky male Indian Myna rip the leaves to shreds trying to make acceptable nests for their imperiously difficult mates .
