My job is fun

I loath shopping.... the dressing rooms with their trick mirrors that make me look ten times my actual size, the rails of uninspiring clothes, snooty sales assistants, lazy sales people, trying to find something small in a large builders warehouse, trying to find parking... the list is endless.

I have this theory that if your mother likes shopping so will you. Obviously, my mom hated it. The only food shop I can remember going into, with her, was Thrupps and that was when it was still on Jan Smuts Avenue. She did however love nurseries. So do I and as a landscaper I get to go to the wholesale nurseries which are even more interesting.

I love the muddy lanes wet from the automated irrigation, the tunnels filled with herbs, flowers and vegetable seedlings and the people- the growers, the pickers, the office bound and the owners. Everyone loves their job and it shows. They have welcomed me with open arms, given me books to read, advice to take in and lots of encouragement. After sixteen years of sitting behind a computer, I love the interaction, the kinship and the connection. They repay my enthusiasm with trips around their tunnels. They are attentive, kind and real. Just my kind of people.

Last week I went to Ludwigs to buy David Austin roses - these are the most beautiful, most fragrant English roses on the planet. Justice assisted me. Every bush that I'd point to he'd cut me a rose so that I could smell it. His old worldly charm was very quaint.

I left with 17 rose bushes and a hand-picked bouquet. Lovely.
